Cockroaches are a health problem. They not only carry and spread disease organisms but cause
allergies.
Most Alaskan cockroaches are of the German species, but because of world travel and freight
shipments, we are finding other species of cockroaches in our state.
The German cockroach is the most prolific variety. A female carries the egg sack with her until
it is about ready to hatch. Each egg sack may have 30 to 40 nymphs which hatch ready to run. Each
female may produce about four to eight egg sacks in her lifetime, which is about a year. This is
why a building may be overrun with cockroaches in a very short period of time. When they get into
the wall systems, the wiring and plumbing become a freeway for them.
Ridding a home of cockroaches is achievable if immediate action is taken upon finding them.
In apartment buildings, the owner is often hampered by tenants who do not inform him of the problem
and do not cooperate in preparing the unit for the extermination process. Movement by tenants spread
cockroaches to other apartment buildings. Quite often cockroaches travel home inside vacationers
baggage. Cockroaches also come free with packages mailed to us, which are prepared in an infested
area. They also come home with children from their friend's house or from the school they attend.
An integrated pest management approach is very effective. As a professional peat control operator,
I have at my disposal many long researched baits, residual sprays, aerosol, powders, growth
regulators, etc… to control cockroaches. These are only available to licensed professionals. The
secret is, act immediately and do not let the population explode.
